"Empire" Season 3 was on hold for several weeks due to the presidential debate and the World Series. Here’s a recap of what happened in the latest episode, in case you forgot.
Empire tries to sign Nessa.
Lucious and Andre come to Shyne’s studio to try to sign Nessa. But Shyne has invited multiple music companies there to compete to sign her. Andre talks to Nessa separately and convinces her to sign with Empire. Shyne angrily comes to Lucious’ office to talk about Nessa. Andre and Lucious beat him up.
Andre and Nessa hook up at the end of the episode.

Flashbacks show us how Lucious won Cookie.
In a flashback to Philadelphia when Cookie and Lucious were teens, we see Cookie dating another young boy. Her father was a fan of the boy, but Lucious and his friends beat him up outside of a club one night. Cookie says Angelo reminds her of the boy.
Jamal gets Freda out of jail.
Jamal goes back to prison to see Freda. During the visit, Freda looks like she has been badly beaten up.
“Let’s just say you have some really big fans in here,” Freda says.
This inspired Jamal to try to get Freda out of jail. He hires a lawyer to say Freda has a history of mental illness. During Freda’s hearing, Jamal lies, saying that the Lyon family’s behavior lead her to temporarily insane during the shooting. Jamal’s maneuvering works, and Freda gets out of jail. Lucious later tells Jamal that he arranged for Freda to be assaulted in jail, and wanted that he Jamal to deceitfully get her out of prison.

Angelo takes Cookie to the opera.
Angelo invites Cookie to the opera. She encounters some of his friends, who talk about spending the summer in Martha’s Vineyard. Cookie responds by talking about her time in prison. In the restroom, Cookie hears the women talking badly about her. She comes out of the stall and tells them off. Although the opera wasn’t a totally positive experience for Cookie, she gets inspiration for Tiana’s new song.
Later in the episode. Jamal invites Angelo to the recording of Tiana’s new video for the song, which is based off the opera. Angelo seems impressed by Cookie's work ethic, but Lucious tries to intimidate him.
