UPDATE: June 16, 7 a.m.

A family member of the 6-year-old who died after being shot in the head Tuesday night said the shooting was accidental.

Zachary Williams, the uncle and caretaker of the child he identified as Danny Waye, said the boy was playing with a gun that was brought to the home by a friend.

Williams said he was asleep at the Northwest home on Allene Road when he heard the gunfire.

Medical personnel responded and tried to provide treatment but the boy was ultimately pronounced dead at the home.

Williams said he has been caring for him since he was 2 years old and said Danny’s parents are incarcerated.

Action News Jax is working to learn from police whether anyone will face any charges in the child’s death.

Williams doesn’t believe anyone should be charged.

“There’s more to the story. I’m not gonna be able to say nothing until the police get done their investigation but it was an accident,” Williams said. “He’s a child and I guess curiosity got the best of him.”

June 15, 11:30 p.m. Update:

A 6-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the head in Northwest Jacksonville Tuesday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and JSO responded to the home on Allene Road in Dinsmore around 7:30 p.m. They attempted to provide medical treatment but pronounced the child dead inside the home.

JSO said seven people were home at the time of the shooting. All individuals were detained, taken in for questioning, and are cooperating with investigators.

According to officials, all seven who are being questioned are residents of the home and are a mix of juveniles and adults. That group does not include the child’s parents.

JSO said the boy’s parents do not live at the home where he died, and their location is currently unknown.

However, they do believe the child’s caretaker was one of the seven residents taken in for questioning.

Officials are treating this incident as an ‘undetermined death,’ but say they are in the early stages of a complicated investigation.
