NORTHEAST FLORIDA, SOUTHEAST GEORGIA — More than 33,100 people in Florida and 25,270 people in Georgia have been infected with the new coronavirus, and the number of deaths from the outbreak continues to rise. Officials are attempting to contain the COVID-19 outbreak in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia as schools, businesses and public events are closed or canceled.

Gov. Ron DeSantis to speak at Little Talbot Island State Park on Friday

April 30, 4:33 p.m.: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will hold a news conference about the state’s response to COVID-19 at Little Talbot Island State Park in Jacksonville on Friday.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry will also be at the news conference. Action News Jax sources say DeSantis will be making an announcement about reopening state parks.

St. Johns County beaches to reopen Monday

April 30, 4:33 p.m.: Beginning Monday, May 4, all restrictions previously in place on St. Johns County beaches are rescinded.

On-beach driving remains prohibited and CDC guidelines and social distancing restrictions remain in place.

TIAA Bank Field Lot J COVID-19 testing site now open to everyone

April 30, 1:35 p.m.: Anyone, regardless of age or symptoms can now be tested at the TIAA Bank Field Lot J testing site, according to a news release. The tests are free and no appointment is required to come to the drive-thru testing site. A maximum of five people can be tested per vehicle, which must have working A/C and windows that open and fully close.

Adults need a valid photo ID. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present. Those coming to be tested should be prepared to answer a prescreening questionnaire.

Jacksonville mayor gives update on applying for Duval County stimulus payment, Phase One reopening of city

April 30, 12:05 p.m.: Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry announced Duval County residents will be able to apply for the stimulus relief payment by setting up an appointment online at www.jaxrelief.coj.net on Friday, May 1 starting at 10 a.m., when the website is live. If a Duval County resident does not have internet access, they are asked to call 904-630-2489 to schedule an appointment on Friday, May 1 at 10 a.m. If you qualify for the $1,000 payment, you will receive a confirmation number. Curry stated if you do not have an appointment, you will be turned away. Appointments are being scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

To prove income, a pay stub, bank statements, or a letter from an employer will have to be provided along with ID and Social Security number.

Curry also announced the following regarding the Phase One reopening of Jacksonville:

  • The executive order limiting occupancy to 50 people in a public space will be amended on Monday to be congruent with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order.
  • Bars, pubs & nightclubs shall continue to suspend the sale of alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption. Gyms and personal care services like hair and nail salons, massage and other services with prolonged person-to-person contact will remain closed.

Nassau County officials to outline Phase One recovery plans

Clay County to have COVID-19 testing sites for residents only

April 30, 9:15 a.m.: Officials said in a meeting Thursday there will be COVID-19 testing available for Clay County residents only at the following areas starting next week. It is by appointment only and the resident must be coronavirus symptomatic.

Nassau County church hosting drive-through food giveaway to help families amid pandemic

April 30, 5:20 a.m.: Buford Grove Baptist Church will be having a drive-through food giveaway today from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. (or until food runs out). The food is coming from Farmshare, an organization that partners with over 2,000 food pantries, churches and schools to make sure Floridians don’t go hungry.

The food giveaway is drive-through only because of COVID-19. No walk-ups will be accepted. Those who would like to get food are asked to stay in their cars when they arrive, keep the windows rolled up and open the trunk of the car.

Everyone is welcome to receive food. Proof of income or any other documents are not needed.
