JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 24-year-old man is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday night near the Woodspring Suites, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Officers responded to the 3400 block of Saland Way just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after reports of a person shot. Upon arrival, JSO said they found a victim lying in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded and pronounced the victim dead at the scene. He was later identified as Charles Newsome, 47.
Detectives with JSO’s Homicide Team 4 and the Crime Scene Unit responded to investigate. Following interviews with witnesses, investigators identified Saveon Antonitis West, 24, as a potential suspect.
Officials announced West was located and detained less than 24 hours after the shooting with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and JSO’s SWAT team.
Following a joint investigation with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office, the case was classified as a homicide, and an arrest warrant for murder was obtained for West.
He is currently in jail awaiting a future court date.
