$22M grant to help families rebuild after Hurricane Matthew

When Hurricane Matthew swept through our area it brought with it damaging winds and devastating floods.

Now, a new $22 Million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is trying to help people in St. Johns County rebuild.

The Restore St. Johns County Hurricane Housing Recovery Program is being funded through the grant and with the money they received they want to help with home elevation and repairs throughout the county.

St. Johns County told Action News Jax there could be as many as 500 homes in that still may need repairs.

“Unfortunately, there still are so many homeowners out there that are still recovering from those damages whether it was to their roof, flooding damage, any of that so we definitely encourage anybody that still has unmet hurricane Matthew needs to come talk to us,” said Sarah Hande, communications specialist for St. Johns County.

The program is geared toward lower income families but anyone who was affected by hurricane Matthew in St. Johns County is encouraged to apply.

All you need to do is register online at www.sjcfl.ur/restore or by visiting the St. Johns County Health and Human Services Center.

“You will be assigned a case manager, determining your eligibility only takes about 15-20 (minutes) online or in the intake center so once you determine if you’re eligible or not, you will have a case manager walk you through,” says Hande.

The program will officially be open to the public on Jan. 7.
