30 surfboards stolen from Saltwater Cowgirls surf camp

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — Police are looking for the thieves who stole from a local camp for girls. The crooks stole a trailer full of supplies they needed from a local beach business.

The criminals got away with thousands of dollars in equipment, but the young women are making the best of a bad situation.

On Thursday, those girls surfed with 30 surfboards borrowed from other surf camps and from parents. The counselors for Saltwater Cowgirls said this isn't just about surfing. This camp is about empowering girls.

Saltwater Cowgirls co-owner Lorraine Hernandez said she used those boards to teach girls a lot more than how to surf.

"We're teaching them about things of life: to be kind to one another, to be encouraging to one another, no cattiness, to really be strong and brave out there," Hernandez said.

"I just feel like we've gotten stronger and we're stronger swimmers, we're stronger people," said camper Isabella DiStefano.

And now, Hernandez said they're using the crime as a lesson: Even when you fall off the board, you get back up and keep surfing.

The unique thing about each of those surf boards that were stolen is they all have names written on the bottom in permanent marker. So if you see that, it could be one of the stolen boards.

Action News checked with the Jacksonville Beach Police Department and they tell us investigators are looking for the stolen boards at secondhand sports shops.

You can keep an eye out too: The missing trailer has some distinctive graffiti on the driver's side. It says SOFE or SORE. There's also a large dent in the silver part where trailer hitches up to vehicle.
