A Jacksonville 8-year-old who accidentally shot and killed himself while visiting his grandparents was laid to rest on Saturday.
The community came out to support the family of Chris Scurry, who died on July 15.
“He loved to pray, he loved to encourage and he always had thoughts. He always had a question,” his mother Davina Gooden said. "He was just an amazing kid."
Chris loved football and was entering third grade at Hyde Grove Elementary.
His life was cut short after he picked up a 9 millimeter handgun at his grandparents' house in Port Orange.
He accidentally shot himself under the arm and a bullet went through his lung, Gooden said.
People at the funeral recognized the heroic acts of Chris' 12-year-old brother, who tried to save him by performing CPR until paramedics got to the home.
“I want to tell him what a good job he did for trying to save his little brother," the boys' uncle said. "A lot of kids would of ran or screamed, but he hung in there."
Part of the gun used in the shooting was traced to a gun manufacturer, according to a South Daytona Beach police report.
It and 42 other gun receivers were in a box meant to be discarded when they were stolen from SCCY in 2009.
Gooden does not know how the gun ended up in her son's hands.
So far no one has been charged in Chris' death.
Gooden is asking parents to put down their guns.
“I know god doesn’t make mistakes, but this honestly could have been avoided,” she said.
