CALLAHAN, Fla. — A woman and her 27-year-old nephew are accused of stealing nearly $900 worth of seafood and beer from the Winn-Dixie on State Road 200 in Callahan Sunday.

Isaiah Moore of Orange Park and his aunt, 50-year-old Gail Hamilton of Jacksonville, were both arrested on a charge of theft, according to a Nassau County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Hamilton is also accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and Moore is accused of depriving 911 communications, the report stated.

Witnesses told deputies that Moore and Hamilton “exited the store with the merchandise, bypassing all points of sale without paying,” according to the arrest report.

The two were followed by two employees who were shouting, “Stop them, they are stealing.” One witness said they turned to Moore and said, “Stop, security” and said Moore punched him in the left temple and then in the lower jaw.

Another witness, who followed Moore out of the store to take a picture of his license plate and call 911, said Moore slapped her phone out of her hand, “delaying her communication to law enforcement,” the report said.

This same witness told police that Hamilton rolled down her window and “threatened to run her and her fiance over,” the report said.

Hamilton got in the driver’s seat of a green Mazda Protege and Moore got into the passenger’s seat. The witness who was allegedly punched by Moore said as the car accelerated, it nearly hit an employee while leaving the parking lot.

Deputies reviewed surveillance video that they said showed Moore and Hamilton walk into the store and eventually walk out “with the shopping cart full of food.”

Winn-Dixie employees showed deputies a receipt of the stolen items, which included:

  • 19 medium lobster tails, valued at $13.99 a piece
  • Four Peru scallops, valued at $19.99 a piece
  • Two 26/30 count raw shrimp, valued at $12.99 a piece
  • Four 32 oz. lobster tails, valued at $21.98 a piece
  • Five crab clusters, valued between $35 and $53
  • Three snow crab legs, valued at $31.77 a piece
  • One pack of Heineken beer, valued at $29.00
  • One pack of Sam Adams beer, valued at $20.99
  • One pack of Coronita beer, valued at $29.99
  • One pack of Yuengling beer, valued at $28.49

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office made contact with Hamilton and Moore, and then Nassau deputies interviewed them.

Hamilton denied stealing anything from Winn-Dixie. She told deputies she and her nephew stopped at Winn-Dixie to pick up a prescription for his cousin, and she denied trying to run anyone over with her car.

She said she was in line purchasing an alcoholic beverage for her husband when “she heard someone yelling and she realized her nephew was walking out of the store with a grocery cart,” the report said.

She “witnessed an altercation between an unknown male and her nephew and told (him) to get in the car so they could leave,” according to the report.

Moore told deputies that he and his aunt were just driving around and decided to stop at a grocery store to shop for food.

Both Hamilton and Moore were wearing the same clothes as they were observed wearing in the surveillance video, deputies said.
