For more than 150 years, June 19 has been a day to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States.
Communities across the country will mark the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned that they, and all other slaves in the U.S., had been granted freedom.

FRIDAY, JUNE 19
- A Juneteenth block party will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1818 North Davis Street in Jacksonville.
- The Durkeeville Historic Museum is having an open house tour from noon to 6 p.m. to help neighbors learn more about Jacksonville’s black history.
- “Living in color! A Juneteenth and Pride month celebration” will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 5206 Pearl Street North. Click here to register.
- “Juneteenth: Understanding and Celebrating 155 Years of Freedom” will have a special “community conversation” to reflect and celebrate the freedom and independence of Black Americans. It will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the 6 Ft. Away Gallery (1745 West 15th Street.)
SATURDAY, JUNE 20
- A Melanin Market event will take place at 4819 Soutel Drive next to First New Zion Missionary Baptist Church from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
SUNDAY, JUNE 21
- There’s plans for a meet up at American Beach in Nassau County starting at 2 p.m.
On Friday morning, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry joined by Dr. Charles E. Moreland and Jacksonville Council-member Priestly Jackson issued a statement in celebration of the historic day. Watch below:
