Clay County School Board approves attendance boundary changes

The School District of Clay County is moving ahead with plans for boundary changes that are meant to make way for new residents moving into the county.

Superintendent Charlie Van Zant told Action News Jax the changes are meant to better utilize the schools they have now and to account for a growing student population.

Many of the changes focus on the Oakleaf Plantation area.

"The growth is obviously out in the Oakleaf area, and so the attendance boundary changes there are to address that growth,” Van Zant said. “For years, the Fleming Island area was the area for growth."

Plantation Oaks Elementary and Oakleaf Village Elementary would both be part of the attendance realignment.

One parent told the school board drawing new lines isn’t enough to keep up with population growth in Oakleaf.

“Why did we not secure the money from the budget for the builders to approve a new school that we talked about 10 years ago right outside of Eagle Landing to accommodate the growth?” Christine Perez said. “I would like you to make it a priority to look at the safety of my 7-year-old who is there. I challenge you to be at that school please. Go look at the lunchroom.”

Van Zant said the district is looking at a site for a third elementary school in Oakleaf but said the money just isn’t there yet.

The board voted on boundary changes that affect 13 schools.

Argyle Elementary was voted to be reclassified as a pre-K through 6th grade school.

The school board still needs to give final approval on the boundary changes during the April 21 meeting.
