Construction begins on Southside Blvd. aimed at reducing congestion

SOUTHSIDE — Construction has begun on Jacksonville’s Southside.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is working to widen the roadways near the intersection of Southside Blvd. and Gate Pkwy. in an effort to reduce traffic.

“It’s a dense corridor, said Ray Hampton, with FDOT, said. “In an effort to try and get ahead of our growth and really help harness the economic development we’re instituting what’s called a displaced left-hand turn. “It will give drivers more “green time" when traveling through the intersection.”

“[the lights] seem really really short just because there’s so much traffic,” Kerena Atkins said. She lives in the area and drives the route frequently.

“It’s like a few cars get through during the middle of the intersection, and then cars turning at the stop and wait.”

This is a video from FDOT laying out the construction plan and what drivers will need to be aware of once the project is complete.

The project is set to be completed by the Fall of 2022 at a cost of $7.4 million dollars.
