Crash on I-295 North turns deadly

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The Florida Highway Patrol is stating that a crash on I-295 North near Heckscher Drive has turned deadly.

UPDATE 8:50 a.m.

FHP reports that a vehicle was traveling northbound on I-295 near the exit to Heckscher Drive when for reasons still unknown, the vehicle traveled off the roadway to the right and collided with the guardrail end.

The driver continued traveling in a northerly direction and collided with a light pole before traveling down the embankment of the Heckscher Drive exit where it came to a final rest.

The driver and passenger were both transported to the hospital where the passenger was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

At this time several emergency vehicles are at the scene and the right lane remains blocked.

Drivers are warned to expect delays when traveling in this area.
