Dead dogs dumped on the side of the road, residents say its not the first time

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Residents in one Northside neighborhood said they’re working to find out who is dumping dead dogs in their streets.

Tammy Holton said she was horrified when she discovered the animals. Shockingly, it's not the first time it's happened.

Holton said she saw the dogs in garbage bags on the side of the road.

"It's just really crazy that somebody would even do something like that. I’m sorry, but you don’t do that to man’s best friend,” Holton said.

She said now she wants police to find out who’s killing and dumping these dogs.

“On one occasion, the dog was burned beyond recognition," Holton said. "This is probably the fifth or sixth time I’ve found multiple dead dogs. Sometimes, it’s just one, sometimes it’s two or three,” Holton said.

Holton said she's urging officials to investigate.

“I’ve called the city. I’ve called (The) Humane Society. I’ve called JSO,” she said.

In the past, Holton said the dogs have been removed, but she thinks there needs to be more done to prevent this from happening again.

“I want to see them partner up with JSO and figure out who it is that’s doing this,” Holton said.

In Florida, it is a first-degree misdemeanor to unnecessarily kill an animal.

It is also a third-degree felony to intentionally causes animal cruelty by inflicting pain that results in death.

Both of those crimes could cause someone to serve jail time and pay thousands of dollars in fines.
