TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the Legislature will hold a special session on Amendment 3 now that voters have approved it.
“I’m going to let the Legislature kind of get their feet under them, I’m not just going to throw something on them,” DeSantis said Wednesday.

He said he would leave it up to lawmakers when it would happen.
“I’ll work with them, I’ll probably let them pick the dates. You know, I’m basically on lame duck duty at this point,” he said.
Amendment 3 increases the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. Annual inflation adjustments begin in 2029.

DeSantis said legislators would likely set the schedule for those adjustments during the special session.
“I think what it’ll do is it will set the schedule for further homestead expansion because we want people to be able to get that,” DeSantis said.
He did note that the amendment needs to be implemented by January 1.
DeSantis said a Taxpayer Bill of Rights would likely need to be set so that local governments couldn’t issue taxes in other ways as a go-around.

“I think people are going to be very excited to get some much needed relief,” he said.
He said that along with property tax relief, homeowners should also see insurance relief.
“You’re going to see another reduction in Citizens insurance in South Florida, probably by the end of the year, beginning of next year,” he said. " ... I’m very confident that carriers are going to continue to offer lower rates because now you have a lot to choose from. And what consumers are doing, they get a high premium, they’re looking around and they’re finding they can save money. That’s how you drive it down."
