ATLANTA, Ga. — U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff has secured a second term representing Georgia in the Senate, while former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won the gubernatorial election to become the first Black woman elected governor of any U.S. state.
Ossoff centered his reelection campaign on combating political corruption. His platform placed a primary emphasis on President Donald Trump and the growth of the First Family’s fortune following Trump’s return to the White House.
During the campaign, Ossoff targeted his opponent, Collins, a supporter of Trump who gained a seat in Congress after backing the president’s 2020 election claims. U.S. Sen. Ossoff criticized Collins for what he described as a “pathetic, childlike devotion to Trump.”
Ossoff also called Collins a “bigot” who “brought dishonor to our state,” pointing to Collins’ employment of aides and a son-in-law who engaged with white supremacists and shared white nationalist material online.
When questioned about the issue, Collins publicly denounced antisemitism and white supremacy, stating that he had terminated the staff members involved. However, Collins later abruptly exited a campaign press event after being asked further questions on the topic.
Ossoff’s sharp criticisms and national appeal powered extensive fundraising efforts. His campaign raised funds that exceeded those of Collins by a ratio greater than 10-to-1.
Looking ahead to his second term, Ossoff’s priorities include reducing expenses, safeguarding medical insurance coverage and continuing investigative efforts in Washington.
He expressed plans to lower medical costs, roll back health insurance premium increases and bolster patient protections. During an interview yesterday, Nov. 3, Ossoff criticized instances where cancer patients were forced to fight insurance companies to secure care coverage. “It’s wrong, and we should ban it,” Ossoff said.
