Jacksonville police: Man exchanges gunfire with burglary suspect on Ricker Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police are investigating after a man was shot Saturday night, possibly during a burglary, on the Westside.

Around 9 p.m., officers responded to a call about a burglary in progress in the 7100 block of Ricker Road.

Before officers arrived, a shooting happened. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man found another man on his property and the two exchanged gunfire.

The suspect left the area in a white compact pickup truck.

A potential suspect was later located at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Stephen Stalvey who lives nearby said he heard the gunshots and the tire of his van was shot.

“At first we heard three shots and we thought they were fireworks and then we heard like three or four more.” Stalvey said.

An Action News Jax source revealed, a man living next door saw someone inside the home with a flashlight and called the homeowner. Who showed up at the house.

The homeowner was not hurt but police believe the potential suspect showed up to the hospital.

Action News Jax law and safety expert talked about the exchange of gunfire in this case.

“Under these circumstances, the property owner has every right to defend himself. He’s not defending the property.”
