Jacksonville tax preparer is facing federal charges for tax fraud

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville tax preparer is facing federal charges for tax fraud.

Kenyan Scott allegedly falsified documents to get more money on his clients’ tax returns.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Scott started his own tax return business called Professional Resource Services Inc. in 2009.

According to the documents, Scott “knowingly reported false information to decrease the amount of tax owed … to increase the amount of the tax refund received.”

It also states he “filed returns with false information” which “caused the IRS to issue refunds when tax would have been owed.”

Scott allegedly did this 55 times for 13 different clients from 2013 to 2017.

Action News Jax knocked on Scott’s door for comment, but there was no answer.

With the 2019 tax season in full swing, local CPA Chris Russell says a promise for big returns is a red flag.

“If you saw something that said ‘hey if you have one dependent you get $1000 back, if you have two dependents you get $2000 back,’ that’s probably a good indication that they’re not may be operating on the up and up if you will.”

Russell says the best thing to do is be a part of the process.

He says to make sure you know what documents you’re signing and get copies of them as well as reviewing your tax return to make sure everything is accurate.
