One dead, two hurt in truck stop shooting that ended in police shootout

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two people are recovering in the hospital. One of them was shot by police.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says the incident started at a Pilot Travel Center on U.S. 301.

JSO blocked off the entire Pilot station as crime scene technicians spread out evidence markers in the parking lot behind the store.

According to Chief TK Waters, the first reports of a shooting came in at 7 a.m.

When officers got there, they found one man dead and another hurt.

“They spoke to someone who was in the parking lot that saw something, that saw what had taken place and were pointed in the direction of a semi that had left,” said Waters.

That semi eventually stopped on I-10 eastbound.

Waters said that’s when officers approached the truck.

“As they were approaching that vehicle, shots rang out from that individual in front of that vehicle,” said Waters.

Waters said some shots hit one of the patrol cars.

Truck driver Alberto Cuba frequents the Pilot on his trips. Hearing fellow truck drivers were involved in such a violent incident concerned him.

“Really surprised me. I never heard of anything like that between truckers,” he said.

JSO said all three officers involved fired their weapons and that none of them was hurt.

The person they wounded is in critical condition.

The officers were wearing body cameras at the time.

JSO says a motive, and whether or not the people involved knew each other, is under investigation.
