Regency COVID-19 testing to close New Year’s Day, sees near record-high holiday turnout

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Nomi Health’s Regency Square Mall test site has completed more than 3,000 COVID-19 tests daily since last Monday, December 21.

The record of 3,499 was almost broken Wednesday, December 30 with 3,401.

The Centers for Disease Control recommended getting tested three to five days after holiday travel and doctors expected a spike in coronavirus cases after holiday travel.

On Wednesday, 7,920 people tested in Duval County and 788 came back positive, according to the Department of Health. That’s about 9.95% of the tests that were reported positive.

According to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard, the percent positive has been at or above 10% since Thanksgiving.

Carolyn Blackshear was at Regency on New Year’s Eve to get tested. She was expecting to wait up to two hours to get through the line.

“Just be more cautious. I work in daycare, so washing your hands is a must. Just be a little more cautious,” Blackshear said.

Regency’s COVID-19 test site, along with the rest of the state-run sites, will close New Year’s Day and re-open Saturday at 9 a.m.
