JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After a concerned viewer called this morning about a broken tabulator at a polling location, Action News Jax spoke with Jerry Holland, the Duval Supervisor of Elections, about the protocol poll workers follow to maintain election integrity.

A tabulator, the machine used to count ballots, unexpectedly broke at the Community Presbyterian Church polling location in Atlantic Beach Tuesday morning.

Instead of turning voters away on Election Day, Holland explained that poll workers followed protocol, which is to instruct the voter to put the ballot into the emergency slot on the machine, which drops it into a separate locked compartment that will only be opened after polls close.

After polls close at 7 p.m., those ballots will be fed into the machine by poll workers. Voters are encouraged to return to the polling location in the evening to watch their ballot be counted.

Holland told Action News Jax a new tabulator was on the way to the Atlantic Beach location to replace the broken machine and begin counting the following ballots.

Two other polling locations, the Regency Square Branch Library and The Church of Eleven22 Arlington campus, faced issues that were quickly resolved.

Both locations lost power before polls opened due to a wider outage in Jacksonville’s Regency area, which affected more than 5,000 customers. Poll workers quickly resolved the issue, bringing in generators to power the machines.

Holland said both locations opened on time without any issues. Power has since been restored to the area.
