Remains of missing Clay County woman found in Georgia landfill, investigators say

CHARLTON COUNTY, Fla. — UPDATE 2/1/2020:

Corey Binderim has been detained for the murder of Susan Mauldin, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

Binderim was named a person of interest early on in the investigation.

Mauldin’s remains were discovered on the ninth day of the search at the Chesser Island Road Landfill, police say.

Dental records were able to match a skull that was located to Mauldin, investigators say.

The FBI began working with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office after they identified the landfill as a possible site of evidence in this case.

An autopsy will be conducted next week, the State Attorney’s Office says.

Original story below:

FBI Jacksonville said “several items of interest” were found during the search of a Charlton County landfill as the agency investigates the disappearance of Susan Mauldin of Clay County.

The FBI, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office began searching the Chesser Island Road Landfill on Jan. 21 in relation to Mauldin’s disappearance.

The search is over and the items that were found are undergoing testing, the FBI said.

According to the CCSO, Mauldin was last seen Oct. 23 and was reported missing the next day.

Six days later, CCSO believed Mauldin could be in danger.

More than two weeks went by, and there was no mention of Mauldin’s disappearance case by the Sheriff’s Office until Nov. 19, when it announced Corey Binderim was a person of interest in Mauldin’s case.

On Dec. 3, Binderim was arrested on an unrelated charge and taken to the Duval County Jail.

On Jan. 21, Binderim was put on a hold at the Duval County Jail.

Police say Binderim had been working on Mauldin’s bathroom, but Mauldin fired Binderim and requested her money back.

Action News Jax found Binderim isn’t licensed to work as a contractor in Florida.
