JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville firefighters returned to a neighborhood Saturday where a month ago a family ripped through a townhome, killed three children and tore apart a family.
Crews came back the Windergate neighborhood in Mandarin to help make homes safer, knocking on more than 250 doors and installing more than 150 smoke alarms.
“We can’t change what happened here,” the post on Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department’s website read. “But every alarm installed today means one more family will get the warning they need, when they need it most.”
In the August 26 early-morning fire, two adults and two children managed to escape before firefighters arrived. The blaze shook the neighborhood.
Fire crews, accompanies by workers from the American Red Cross, found a neighborhood receptive to the offer of help.
“Neighbors greeted us and shared how the past few weeks have affected them and how they’ve been looking out for one another. And along the way, there were plenty of smiles.”
