JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville police said officers responded to a crash Saturday that left the driver of an SUV injured and in the waters of the St. Johns River in Mayport Village.
Police were not able to confirm a post on that appeared on Facebook, showing the SUV in the water up to its windows and citing information about a crash involving the same vehicle in nearby Atlantic Beach.
“While we were in Mayport Village doing our monthly roadside trash cleanup, we saw six police vehicles running code and heading toward the Michael B. Scanlan Mayport Boat Ramp,” said the post on the Mayport Waterfront Partnership page.
“(There were) four units from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and two from the Atlantic Beach Police Department,” said the post, which also said the incident “reportedly began on Mayport Road in the City of Atlantic Beach.
The poster said driver later ended up at the end of Ocean Street at the St. Johns Bar Pilot Association’s private gate. After the gate was opened, the driver continued through the property, reportedly struck a boat, and then drove the truck into the St. Johns River.
The driver was transported to the hospital by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, whose rescue vehicles can be seen in posts on the group’s page.
