Florida attorney pushing for medical marijuana amendment on 2016 ballot

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Medical marijuana to save people from suffering -- that’s the mantra of a Florida attorney's push to get lawmakers to put a bill allowing the treatment on the ballot.

The debate of marijuana legalization has been going on in Florida and across our country for years.

This year, the group People United for Medical Marijuana is trying to get a proposed state constitutional amendment on the upcoming 2016 ballot.

The group’s leader is John Morgan, an Orlando attorney who’s contributed more than $1.8 million to the cause. In October alone, he provided over $240,000.

Florida has debated medical marijuana before.

Last November, people voted against an amendment to legalize marijuana.

Action News Jax anchor John Bachman traveled to California to show how it might work if marijuana was legalized.

Now the debate is happening again with a new push for a constitutional amendment.

On Dec. 8, the Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments before deciding whether to approve the initiative's wording.

If the Supreme Court approves the amendments wording, supporters of the proposed constitutional amendment will need to submit a little over 660,000 valid petition signatures to get on next year's ballot. As of Nov. 11, they had around 350,000.
