Former Jacksonville councilwoman Katrina Brown given 30 days to prepare for fraud case trial

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A former Jacksonville City Councilwoman was given a delay in her federal fraud case, but not for as long as she wanted.

Katrina Brown wanted the judge to essentially start over.

She said she hasn't had time to review facts, interview witnesses and prepare for a trial that was supposed to start Aug. 19.

The judge told the court Tuesday she'd had 14 months to do just that.

Before the former councilwoman asked to represent herself, she had two attorneys and a forensic accountant working on her case.

Now a jury will hear from Brown as her own representation and as a witness if she testifies.

Brown will be tried with former Councilman Reggie Brown, to whom she is not related.

They're both part of a 38-count federal indictment centering on money loaned to Katrina Brown's family's barbeque sauce company, which was never established.
