JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is already investigating its fourth homicide of 2016 on Jan. 4.
JSO said 42-year-old Kenya Davis was shot inside her apartment at the Ortega Pines Apartments early Monday morning.
Friends said her boyfriend was shot and wounded while her young son was inside around midnight and investigators are working around the clock to find the killer.
For close to 20 hours after bullets riddled the apartment, wave after wave of officers, crime scene investigators and detectives cycled through.
The goal: Piece together who shot and killed Davis and wounded the man, all in front of Davis' young son.
"We heard the 'pow, pow, pow' and 'pop,'" said one neighbor who didn't want to speak on camera.

Friends said Davis had two sons and she just turned 42 last Monday. Davis' Facebook page says she works for the U.S. Navy. Action News Jax has calls and emails out to the Navy asking about any ties Davis may have to the military.
Meanwhile, at least one gunman is on the run after leaving bullet holes and broken glass behind.
Eva lives a few doors down with her small kids. She's deaf but told Action News Jax reporter Cole Heath through sign language and notes she saw the man who lives with Davis arguing with a guy with dreadlocks moments before the shooting.
While Eva said she didn't see any shots fired, she did see the man with dreadlocks run past her right after the shooting.
The Florida Department of Children and Families said the little boy is safe with family.
We have spoken to several neighbors off-camera, asking them for interviews; none of them would speak with us for fear of possible retaliation by whoever shot Davis.
