Cellmate of St. Johns County double murder suspect says killer laughed at murders

Action News Jax has been getting an eerie look into the mind of a St. Johns County man accused of killing two local moms. It all happened in August 2015, in the Murabella Community in St. Johns County.

“He did say that he killed his wife, many, many times,” said Andrew Cherry the cellmate of accused killer James Colley.

That’s what Cherry told St. Johns County authorities during a jail interview in March 2016. Prosecutors said Colley stormed into a Murabella home and shot his estranged wife, Amanda, and her friend Lindy Dobbins, who was hiding in a closet.

During this interview, Cherry said Colley showed no remorse about the murders. “F-----g cheating whores got what they deserved. He shot them. He told me that he shot him,” Cherry said.

Cherry said Colley told him that he found out his wife was cheating, which is why he wanted to kill his wife. Cherry said Colley also wanted to kill the boyfriend.

“He does describe killing his wife and her friend as an act of revenge. Seeing his wife with another guy and he just lost it,” Cherry said.

Also during the interview, Cherry said James Colley admitted to the murders and even the defense he planned on using in court.

“He told me that he was going to use, originally it was going to be, that he was going to use crime of passion.  He was going to try and spin the story as it wasn’t as bad as everybody thinks.  There’s also the insanity defense. He said he’s going to make it out to be that he was in great emotional distress at the time of the crime, and that he didn’t really comprehend what was going on,” Cherry said.

Cherry said despite the multiple stories, one thing stood out to him in every conversation with Coley. “He’s not remorseful about what he did at all,” Cherry said.

Colley has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder for the two women who were able to escape the day of the killings.

He’s due back in court Feb.28.
