It's official: No more Toys R Us kids as toy store shutters its doors permanently

Friday, June 29, marked the end of an era for kids and big kids across America as their favorite toy store closed its doors for good.

In Jacksonville, people flocked to the Markets at Town Center on its final day of business to stock up on heavily discounted toys.

Parents brought their kids to show them one last time what Toys R Us is all about.

Some Toys R Us kids still held on to hope.

“I’m going to miss it. I really love Toys R Us, I hope they can open up some time again in a couple years,” said Natalie Avramescu.

Little Ja’riah felt strongly about the store officially closing for good today.

“It’s not fair!” she said.

Her generation is now the last to know what it’s like to enter Toys R Us and be surrounded by all your favorite toys.

“When you went in there it was just kind of fun you were excited because you get to pick out a toy,” said Leilani Wallace.

But today, shelves were nearly empty and caution tape blocked off aisles as the final toys flew of the shelves. Even the furniture and fixtures had to go.

“It’s sad because I grew up on it and then I brought them here so it’s sad that it’s ending,” said Carrie Hannigan who took her daughters to Toys R Us on the last day.

Toys R Us transcended generations.

All we can say is thank you Toys R Us. Thank you for bringing the kid out of all us, thank you for the memories.

But the people most impacted by the store’s closures are its 30,000 employees without a job.

The property manager at the Markets at Town Center tells Action News Jax there are plans on subdividing the 70-thousand square-foot space that was once held by Toys R Us.
