‘Jacksonville is booming’: Mixed-use development proposed in Brooklyn neighborhood

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A mixed-use development could soon break ground in Brooklyn if given the green light by the city this week.

According to a Downtown Development Review Board agenda, developers are eyeing 390 Park Street to build a five-story apartment complex, along with a restaurant and retail spaces.

The project lead is Columbia Ventures LLC. A report shows the complex would be built with 341 units and a 428-space parking garage.

“A lot of things are going on,” Paris Simpson, who lives nearby, said. “Jacksonville is booming right now, and I love it.”

The development is bounded to the north by Price Street, to the east by Park Street, to the south by Forest Street, and to the west by Spruce Street.

“Knocking all the old buildings, bringing new condos, more houses -- it’s gonna look real nice,” Simpson said.

Timothy Dawkins lives on Jacksonville’s Westside. He often has to take trips to Brooklyn to access his bank and his go-to grocery store.

“I did wish that Brooklyn was in my backyard,” Timothy Dawkins said. “I wouldn’t have to travel so far, especially with the high cost of fuel.”

On the agenda for Tuesday evening’s Jacksonville City Council meeting is talk about supporting the construction of a 6-story extended stay hotel development also in Brooklyn. The project site would be at 600 Park Street and 616 Park Street, the agenda says.

“I think people are really looking at the uprise of the city,” Dawkins said. “All the different things that the mayor is doing is bringing a lot of people to Jacksonville.”

There are several projects up for discussion during Thursday’s 2 p.m. DDRD meeting including the Shipyards Mixed-Use development.
