JSO: Jacksonville officers injured after crash during robbery, kidnapping, auto theft investigation

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it is investigating a robbery, kidnapping and auto theft in the Mayport area. JSO said two officers have been injured.

One of those officers was seriously injured after they were intentionally hit by the suspect's vehicle at the intersection of Wonderwood and Mayport.

When the suspect drove away, police said the second officer was hit in his patrol car at Atlantic and Kernan Boulevard. He was seen running red lights going 100 mph.

It all started around 2:08 p.m. Wednesday at the Lucky Charms Arcade on Mayport Road, JSO said. JSO said a suspect robbed the business at gunpoint.

A business near the shopping plaza, in the 2500 block of Mayport Road, said the Lucky Charms Arcade was robbed. This is about a mile from where drop sticks were thrown to stop the suspect, which is the same location where the officer was hit.

JSO said the owner of Lucky Charms Arcade was watching a live feed of the inside of the store and became suspicious about the suspect. He texted an employee inside to be concerned about the suspect, the Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect locked a person inside a restroom, and then loaded a backpack with money, according to JSO.

JSO said Atlantic Beach police, Neptune Beach police and JSO Air and K-9 responded to the robbery in progress.

The Sheriff's Office said officers, with the help of citizens pointing out the suspect, tracked the suspect to 900 Stern Drive South.

The suspect encountered a citizen and took the citizen's car with the citizen still inside, according to the Sheriff's Office. JSO said this happened around 2:34 p.m.

A person in a nearby neighborhood gave us video of the suspected carjacking related to this investigation. The carjacking happened not long after the robbery occurred and in the same area where the officer was hit by the suspect's vehicle.

A heavy police presence was also at Wonderwood Drive and Mayport Road.

Police on scene told Action News Jax reporter Kevin Clark that an officer was hit by a suspect vehicle. The Sheriff's Office said the officer injured was outside his vehicle when hit by the suspect vehicle. The Sheriff's Office said the suspect intentionally rammed the officer. This happened at 2:40 p.m. according to the Sheriff's Office.

A second officer was injured while attempting to do a vehicle maneuver at Atlantic and Kernan Boulevard, JSO said.

The Sheriff's Office said the suspect was going over 100 mph and ran red lights on Atlantic Boulevard.

There was also a lot of police presence at St. Johns Bluff and Atlantic Boulevard.

JSO is asking residents to avoid the area of St. Johns Bluff and Atlantic Boulevard until further notice. The Sheriff's Office said the road would be closed for a while.

The Sheriff's Office said the chase ended at the intersection of St. Johns Bluff and Atlantic Boulevard when officers stopped the vehicle using a stopping tactic on the vehicle. The vehicle spun into a power pole and the power pole fell and caught fire, according to the Sheriff's Office.

JSO said both the suspect and kidnapped citizen were removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital.

The Sheriff's Office said there are five crime scenes total.

The Sheriff's Office said it believes it knows who the suspect is, and that if it is who investigators believe it is -- that suspect was recently released from prison.

No officers had body cameras, according the Sheriff's Office.
