JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Several women from throughout Jacksonville came together for an event in Springfield focusing on the importance of safety in the community.
Sheriff candidate Mike Williams' wife spoke to the crowd
We caught up with both candidates, who weighed in on the issue of violence in Jacksonville.
“Getting ahead of this problem in this community long term is through prevention. Getting kids when they’re young, getting them engaged. We do it through the Police Athletic League,” Williams said.

“The No. 1 thing that you have to address is the gang issue. Gangs have had an opportunity to organize and come together for years and they were ignored and now they are festering and we're seeing a lot of violent crimes on our street as a result,” said sheriff candidate Ken Jefferson.
Both candidates will be participating in an Action News Sheriff’s Debate, next Thursday, May 14, at the Wilson Center on the Florida State College at Jacksonville south campus. Action News and WOKV radio will broadcast the debate live at 7 p.m.
