JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In light of recent home invasions, surveillance cameras have become a hot topic in Jacksonville.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office installed approximately 20 cameras in Northwest Jacksonville in 2014.

The cameras were installed in high-crime areas and dump sites, according to officials.
Ken Jefferson, Action News Jax Crime and Safety Expert, said cameras help fill a gap when the "code of silence" comes into play.
He said most people in crime-ridden areas don’t share details about crimes because they either distrust police or are scared of retaliation.
“Surveillance cameras cannot prevent incidents from happening, but it’s a great tool for law enforcement to be able to capture and locate individuals for certain crimes,” said Jefferson.

Eunice Burnam, president of the Sherwood Neighborhood Association, said he doesn’t believe there are enough cameras in town.
“As large as the area is where the crimes seem to be happening the most, 20 doesn’t sound like it should be enough to me,” said Burnam.
