A 29-year-old Jacksonville woman who was shot in the head while in her car is recovering, but the shooter is still on the loose.

The attack happened near the intersection of State Road 207 and Highway 17 in East Palatka just before 4 a.m. Saturday.

“I heard a lot of shooting. I heard about 4-5 shots going on,” neighbor Angela Floyd said. Deputies said  the woman was in a car with two other adults and an infant traveling down State Road 207 when someone in a black SUV driving by fired a shot into her car, striking her in the head.

Investigators are talking to several witnesses, including the people who were in the car with the 29-year-old, and looking at surveillance video hoping to find clues that will lead them to the shooter.

“It obviously could’ve been a lot worse,” said Capt. Hancel Woods, public information officer with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Woods said he doesn’t think it was a random shooting.  “And we are investigating what that potential connection between the suspect and the victim could’ve been,” he said.

Deputies said the woman is in stable condition. Her name hasn’t been released.
