JFRD: One confirmed dead after commercial building catches on fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department is on the scene working to contain a commercial building that caught fire just before 6 a.m. in the 100 Block of 1st Avenue North.

UPDATE: 8:05 a.m. 1/1/2023

JFRD issued a second alarm as they searched for residents. Reports state there were two occupants and a dog in the building, with one occupant confirmed dead and the other out at the time of the fire. Officials believe they were a married couple.

JFRD crews were able to control the fire in 45 minutes with Jax Beach PD and State Fire Marshalls investigating together. The Red Cross is also at the scene.

JFRD states that the cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time; but that it was isolated to the top level of the building. The residential and business levels of the building were unaffected, allowing the dog to escape in time.
