Police investigate deadly shooting at La Esperanza Apartments

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police are investigating a shooting that took place early Saturday morning that left one man dead.

Police say Jackie Lee Harris, 52, was shot and killed inside his Southside apartment.

Police searched inside the La Esperanza Apartments for several hours Saturday trying to find clues.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office tells Action News Jax that Harris was shot and killed around midnight Saturday morning. Officers responded to shots fired inside his apartment.

Raymond Conner said he was close friends with Harris and would go over to his house often.

“It's right across from the building where I live in,” Conner said.

He said he went to check on Harris last night after seeing his door open.

“The door halfway open. I hit the light switch with my finger, he was laying in between his couch and his coffee table and he had blood on his back,” Conner said.

Police said Harris was already dead when they arrived at the scene. That’s an image Conner said he will never forget.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the case to call Crime Stoppers at (904) 398-3775.
