JSO said SUV crashed into tree off Winton Drive after police pursuit, driver has serious injuries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office held a briefing tonight to discuss what took place in a car accident that was alerted earlier as one involving injuries.

At around 7:55 p.m. on Thursday evening, JSO officers pulled over a Mazda sports utility vehicle that was occupied by two men. The traffic stop took place at the corner of Moncrief Road and Winton Drive.

Officers learned that the passenger had an active arrest warrant for armed robbery.

While police were taking the suspect into custody outside the vehicle, the driver sped off and came close to hitting several officers.

A vehicle pursuit took place down Winton Drive. That’s when the driver lost control of the SUV at 3200 Winton Drive and struck a tree.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the crash and transported the driver to a local hospital.

JSO said that the driver sustained life-threatening injuries.

The armed suspect was taken into custody. No one else was injured or involved in this incident.

Winton Drive is temporarily closed from Van Gundy Road to Cavalier Road at this time.
