JFRD: Large fire damages four apartments, 1 dog dead at Bentley Green apartment complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A large fire has been reported at the Bentley Green apartment complex, located at 9536 Princeton Square Blvd. S., resulting in extensive damage to multiple apartments.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) informed Action News Jax that around 9:30 a.m., a two-alarm fire heavily damaged four apartments, affecting the first and second floors, as well as the roof and attic space.

JFRD Captain Eric Proswimmer spoke with Action News Jax about the fire, saying, “Crews arrived on scene to heavy fire conditions. They made an interior attack and went after the fire. The second alarm was quickly called by command upon arrival. There’s severe damage.”

Tragically, one dog has been confirmed dead, and another is missing.

“We’re really sorry for the family that lost the dog. They’re very, very upset. We did everything we could; we worked on the dog and tried to save it, but it just wasn’t in the cards today,” Proswimmer said.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and the state fire marshal is investigating. Several families have been displaced due to the damage. The Red Cross is on the scene to determine how many residents require assistance.

One affected family stated they were likely left with nothing, as their renter’s insurance only covered the structure itself and not the damage to their belongings.

“This is not a good scene. It’s not the way that a lot of fathers want to spend their Father’s Day,” Proswimmer added.
