Man arrested after gunshot fired over Flagler College dorm

Elbert Ortiz-Maldonado

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Police arrested a man over the weekend after a gunshot was fired into the air over the top of a Flagler College dorm in St. Augustine.

The St. Augustine Police Department says no injuries were reported, but 27-year-old Elbert Ortiz-Maldonado was taken into custody.

Officers responded to Carmelo’s Marketplace on King Street on Saturday about 1:40 a.m. after a gun was discharged in the area, according to police. They reviewed surveillance video that showed a man in a white t-shirt, torn jeans and dark shoes pulling a gun from a silver vehicle, firing it into the air and then heading west on King Street.

Police say a vehicle matching the description was pulled over about 10 minutes later on West Pope Road, and one of the men in the car matched the description of the person who had the gun in the video.

The officer who reviewed the video went to the traffic stop and identified the man in the vehicle as the person from the video, but a gun wasn't found during the stop.

Ortiz-Maldonado was arrested for improper exhibition of a firearm or dangerous weapon, firing a weapon in a public or residential area and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, according to his arrest report.
