Man reportedly killed by lover's ex-boyfriend remembered as goofy, outgoing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigators are trying to figure out why a man burst into a woman's home and killed her boyfriend before turning the gun on himself.

The home invasion happened on Gibson Road Friday night.

Out of the 16 years she’s known Nicholas Hare, Ashley Arrwood has a hard time picking just one favorite memory.

“He used to always pick up me and my best friend and take us to the mall when we were younger because we couldn’t drive,” Arrwood said. “As much as he hated it, he always did it for us.”

She said that goofy, outgoing 34-year-old loved guitar and was studying to be an engineer at UNF.

Hart’s girlfriend told JSO her ex-boyfriend broke into her home, came into the bedroom, and shot Hare in the head before turning the gun on himself.

First responders took the shooter to the hospital in life-threatening condition. JSO said he shot himself in the head, but he’s still alive.

“This was all over a man being jealous that his girlfriend moved on,” Arrwood said.

Arrwood said she hopes this story is a wakeup call for someone, even if it won’t bring her friend back.

“I just hope that something positive could come out of this and somebody could maybe realize that they’re in an unsafe situation,” Arrwood said.

Action News Jax asked JSO’s Records Department for calls for service to the house to see if there was a history of problems there.

JSO has not released the name of the shooter.
