Man who claimed to witness deadly Jacksonville officer-involved shooting lied under oath, authorities say

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man who claimed to have witnessed a deadly officer-involved shooting at a motel on Youngerman Circle last month.

Investigators say he made the whole thing up under oath.

Colin Terry faces one felony charge of perjury following the March shooting death of 32 year-old Michael Hughes.

Terry identified himself as an eyewitness to the shooting and was interviewed under oath at the State Attorney’s Office alongside his attorneys Marwan Porter and Broderick Taylor, investigators said.

Action News Jax told you Hughes was killed by JSO officers at a Quality Inn after investigators said he resisted arrest following a string of domestic disturbance calls. JSO Chief of Investigations T.K. Waters said officers responded to the motel four times before the encounter that left Hughes dead and an officer injured.

Officers tried talking with Hughes, but he refused to respond to what the officers were saying and walked to the back of the hotel room. When the officers tried to take the suspect into custody for refusing to comply, a fight between broke out, Chief Waters said.

“During the fight, which lasted well over a minute, the suspect can be heard saying ‘I’m a kill you, I’m gonna kill you’. Shortly after, the officer could be heard yelling ‘he’s going for my Taser, he’s got my Taser’.” Chief Waters says.

According to his arrest report, Terry’s sworn testimony was not true or accurate and could be disproven by surveillance video from the scene.

The State Attorney’s Office provided the following statement after Hughes’ arrest-

“Mr. Porter identified Mr. Terry as a purported witness to the shooting. After failing to provide Terry for an interview with investigators, the State was forced to subpoena Terry to appear. He failed to do so on several occasions, which required judicial intervention. The court required Terry to appear before investigators. On Friday, Terry appeared under oath and provided false and fabricated testimony. There is direct evidence Terry was not present at the time of the shooting.”

Terry was arrested and held on a $75,000 bond.
