Nassau County mother arrested for DUI deaths of two sons

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — A Nassau County woman was arrested Saturday morning for a DUI crash that killed her two sons in October.

Tonya Capallia-Eason, 33, of Fernandina Beach was booked into the Nassau County jail Saturday morning on two felony counts related to the deaths of 9-year-old Nick and 8-year-old Nehemiah Capallia.

Deputies said a warrant for her arrest was issued on Friday after toxicology results were reported.

Her blood alcohol level was .148, according to Nassau County Sheriff's Office. She was arrested on two felony counts of DUI that resulted in death.

Friends said she insisted on driving home after a children's Halloween party on the night of Oct. 22.

According to the police report, Capallia-Eason failed to negotiate a curve at Lonnie Crews Road at Lina Road.

Police said her Ford Expedition hit a utility pole before rolling over.

Six other children in the SUV, ranging in age from 7 to 15 years old, were injured in the accident.

Nick and Nehemiah were buried in Michigan where their father Andrew Lee Bird lives. He was granted sole custody of their surviving sister.

Action News Jax spoke with Bird on Sunday. He said he still can’t imagine what would possess her to make the decisions police say she made that night. He hopes she’ll spend the rest of her life in prison thinking about those decisions.

“I have other feelings as far as what she deserves,” Bird said. “But the closest thing I can hope for is that she just spends the rest of her life behind bars, reminded every day of what she did.”
