New statue in St. Augustine honors Martin Luther King Jr.

A new bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been unveiled in St. Augustine.

The bronze sculpture was unveiled at the Accord Civil Rights Museum of St. Augustine on Bridge Street on Monday.

That site is where King strategized and had meetings with local civil rights leaders.

After a moment of silence, the bust was revealed in front of a packed house at 6:05 p.m., the exact time King was assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968.

"For people to come and remember and just reflect on what Dr. King did, because on this corner is where he came to visit back in 1964 and made a difference in America," said Reverend Richard Burton of the Accord Civil Rights Museum.

The bust was created by Potter’s Wax Museum in St. Augustine.
