According to the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department, one person was killed in the crash. The victim is the pilot, who is a 38-year-old woman, said Volusia County Sheriff's Office Information Officer Gary Davidson.
No other victims were found, said Davidson.
Davidson said it is believed that the plane took off from Massey Ranch Airpark in Edgewater.
It's unclear what caused the crash, although heavy fog was reported in the area. However, the pilot contacted the tower saying she was having difficulty navigating through the weather and was trying to find the nearest airport to land, said Davidson.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
