2 stabbed in downtown St. Augustine early Saturday morning

The St. Augustine Police Department is investigating an overnight stabbing in the historic district they believe may have been self-defense.

According to SAPD, the stabbing happened around 1:30 a.m. after a man and a younger woman were approached by a group of people.

Officers say words were exchanged and then the group knocked the man to the ground and began to kick him.

The investigations led SAPD to believe that the man pulled a knife and used it as self-defense.

Officers say those who were stabbed are in stable condition tonight.

Neighbors and employees at nearby businesses we spoke to tell us violent crime is rare in the area.

“I’m quite concerned because all of us bartenders, waitresses, we all walk every day,” said Patricia Nease, a bartender at a local pub.

Police are gathering evidence and continue to interview witnesses. No one has been arrested.

SAPD says those involved in the incident do not live in St. Augustine and have been identified by investigators.

Nease tells Action News Jax she’s going to remain vigilant.

“I am kind of nervous and I say to everybody now, be careful,” said Nease.
