Recycling back online in Jacksonville, new stats show minimal hiccups

Recycling is back online in Jacksonville after a six-month pause, and we’re starting to get an idea of how smoothly the transition is going.

New stats provided to us by the City of Jacksonville shows there were 67 missed recycling pickups between Monday when recycling began and 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

That amounts to roughly 22 missed pickups for every 100,000 customers.

Mayor Lenny Curry (R-Jacksonville) told us problems will be addressed as they arise.

“With any service, there are times where it may not be perfect, and they ought to report it and we’ll get right on it and fix it,” said Curry.

According to City Council Member Joyce Morgan (D-District 1), the biggest problem seen so far has been customers unsure of what day their recycling is supposed to be picked up.

“So many people expected that because we said recycling would start on April the 4th, they automatically assumed that on April 4, everybody would get their recycling picked up. That’s not the case,” said Morgan.

To find out when your recycling is coming, log in to the MyJax App and select “Residential Waste Collection Schedule Lookup“.

Simply type in your address and you’ll have your answer.

Mayor Curry told us knowing your pickup date will make the whole operation more efficient.

“We’re just encouraging people to make sure they know what day they’re up for recycling, they know what can and can’t be recycled so it’s as smooth as possible,” said Curry.

Between garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections, 99% of the city’s 300,000 customers haven’t reported any issues with missed collections this week.
