Restaurant Report: Hunan Wok & Basil Thai cited for roaches

Your health and safety, it’s the reason we go out every week to get you answers about the places you love to eat in the Original Restaurant Report.

Chicken, steak and seafood are some of the types of food you will find at a Chinese restaurant, but state inspectors recently discovered other four-legged creatures after a recent inspection.

Action News Jax Ben Becker paid a visit to Hunan Wok on Fort Caroline Road and asked for a look at its kitchen.

“Can you show me?” asked Becker. “We don’t have any roaches,” responded the worker.

But according to state inspectors, they found 39 live roaches, five dead roaches and raw animal food stored over ready to eat food. It was temporarily closed.

“It says here 39 live roaches,  at least,” said Becker as he pointed to the inspection report.

“I work here and I never have [seen] 39 roaches,” said the man.

Elsewhere, Basil Thai on Hendricks Avenue was cited for three live roaches, raw animal food stored over ready to eat food  and a cutting board stained/soiled. It was temporarily closed.

Inspectors say The Tree Steak House on San Jose Boulevard had small flying insects in the bar area, potentially hazardous food temperatures and no proof of state approved employee training.

Marco’s Pizza on Race Track Road was cited for potentially hazardous food temperatures, a reach-in cooler not maintained in good repair and food stored in a holding unit was not covered.
