Police arrest former dental assistant of controversial former pediatric dentist

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested a former dental assistant of Dr. Howard Schneider, the former pediatric dentist who was arrested Monday for Medicaid fraud and who was under fire by parents who claimed he harmed their children.

Police arrested LaTosha Bevel-Hillsman, 39, Tuesday for practicing dentistry without a license, Medicaid fraud and child abuse.

"A dental assistant is not a dentist," attorney John Phillips said. "Dentists are licensed to do dental procedures and dental assistants are not."

Phillips represents several of the families suing Schneider for medical malpractice.

Many parents have claimed Schneider pulled teeth that did not need to be pulled without parental consent.

Phillps said while many of them are relieved to see accountability; they worry not all of Schneider's actions will be punished by the law.

"It does give solace but it's like a piece of a Swiss cheese," Phillips said. "The family is looking at the holes going, 'Well this wasn't charged and this wasn't charged.'"

Schneider was arrested Monday for Medicaid fraud but bonded out.

"If he is incarcerated certainly it will at least put him in a place where we know he's out," attorney Gust Sarris said. "It will stop him from transferring any more money and it should help us because the issues that we have are called intentional."
