2 bicyclists hit, 1 killed over the weekend in St. Johns County have been identified

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Updated Story 3/1/2021: 44 News in Indiana reported, “An Evansville man was killed in Florida on Sunday after he and two other bicyclists were struck by a vehicle during the 22nd annual “Sea to Sea” Expedition Race.”

AR Georgia, the organizers of the “Sea to Sea” Expedition Race, released a statement in which they identified the 46-year-old man who died as Dr. Troy Manz.

The two women who were also injured in this incident have been identified as Trish Wilkinson and Barbara Gilmore.

AR Georgia said in a statement, “The AR Georgia family is heartbroken at this tragic event and our thoughts are with these families at this difficult time. No issue has greater priority for us than the safety of our participants.”

The University of Indiana, where Dr. Manz was a first-year resident in the Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency Program, released a statement:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the accidental death of Dr. Troy Manz, a first-year resident in the Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency Program through Indiana University School of Medicine, Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville. Before starting his career in medicine, Dr. Manz served our country for eight years in the United States Marine Corps and was currently an active member of the 126th Medical Group Air National Guard. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”

Original Story 2/28/2021: According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a vehicle struck three bicyclists on US 1 near I-95 early Sunday morning.

One bicyclist, a 46-year-old male from Evansville, Indiana was killed.

The other two bicyclists, a 46-year-old female from Freeburg, Illinois and 41-year-old female from St. Louis, Missouri, sustained serious injuries.

All three bicyclists were wearing helmets and traveling in the bike lane, according to FHP.

The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old male from St. Augustine was uninjured.

According to the FHP report, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 28.
