ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A joint retail theft operation by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement led to five arrests and the recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise earlier this month.
The enforcement action targeted retail locations on Durbin Pavilion Drive in northern St. Johns County.
The operation took place Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 as part of the state’s Retail Theft Initiative. Law enforcement officials said organized retail theft increases consumer costs, impacts local businesses and can escalate into violence.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Property Crimes Unit began the operation Aug. 3 after observing three people taking merchandise from Burlington and Ross stores on Durbin Pavilion Drive. Investigators determined the group stole more than $1,400 in goods between the two locations.
Deputies arrested 20-year-old Carlos Garvin, 25-year-old Ivory Monroe, and 28-year-old Laroy Cannon on charges of working in concert to commit retail theft over $750. At the time of the arrest, Monroe had an active theft warrant in Jacksonville, and Garvin was on probation for a prior retail theft offense.
The following day, Aug. 4, loss prevention personnel at a nearby Home Depot alerted detectives to a man pushing a shopping cart full of unpaid merchandise out of the store. Investigators watched 32-year-old Zane Sublett exit the store with more than $1,500 in stolen items and approach a parked SUV.
Sublett ran when he spotted law enforcement vehicles, but deputies quickly arrested him. He was charged with grand theft and resisting without violence.
Deputies also conducted a traffic stop on the SUV and arrested passenger 32-year-old Daron Johnson on active warrants.
