Avelo Airlines will not be coming to Northeast Florida Regional Airport in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The board of the Northeast Florida Regional Airport announced Avelo Airlines, a major low-cost carrier, will not be starting service there.

Instead, it will choose Orlando as its new Florida home.

This all comes amid a dramatic back-and-forth between the board and its now former director Ed Wuellner, who was a proponent for bringing in Avelo.

Action News Jax sat down with Wuellner just days before the board pushed him out of office, and the Avelo deal with him.

He addressed the benefits of that deal:

“With air service, there’s all there’s always the expectation that there’s a revenue enhancement to the airport’s business model. So if an air carrier is successful in accessing our community, then it it pays benefits financially to the airport, which allows us to continue to be self-sustaining and stay off tax rolls,” he said.

Beyond airport income, there’s also lost tourism revenue and the loss of a new flight option for people who live here.
